The world's only 3-in-1 chair.
EXHIBITED AT BIRDSPORTCHMOUTHRUSSUM STUDIO / GALLERY ON THURSDAY 18th JULY 2024!
BirdsPortchmouthRussum Architects hosts Christopher Stead’s London Exhibition for MATRJOSKA, the world’s only 3-in-1 chair. Design as “the riddle of a solution” remains Christopher’s criterion of predilection, and underpins the conception of MATRJOSKA, his first model of nesting chairs to undergo prototype improvements - currently in the third variant.
Christopher Stead explains-
All elements for the three chairs nesting within the single armchair are derived from half panels of differing formats. This is the riddle that needed solving - to exploit efficiently both square format ply panels and rectangular format VALCHROMAT panels.
Through judicious templating, the components for all three chairs are cut from a single sheet.
The name derives from the Russian doll that conceals ever smaller lookalikes within itself - a concept quite distinct from strictly identical stacking chairs. Prevalent in industrial production, the latter can typically be only used individually, hence condemning the stored pile to useless encumbrance of space, an eyesore indeed in that very configuration.
Inversely MATRJOSKA is designed to liberate, enhance and embellish whatever space gives it pride of place in its nested or un-nested states.
La Chaise GIGOGNE is promoted as a signature brand grouping together similar projects, using different materials, for ulterior commercial production by third party dealers.
