CROYDON THE FUTURE

Location: Croydon, London
Project: Masterplan

The proposals investigate the opportunities arising from the introduction of a new tram system and the modification of existing roads and car parks in order to redefine, revitalise and give identity to the centre of Croydon. A peripheral linear park incorporating the new tramway is introduced to extend around the town centre and link the car parks. Wellesley Road, at present a constricted motorway, is transformed into a ‘Central Park’ overlooked by a new ‘Millenium Tower’.

The existing carparks are crowned by lightweight/inflatable structures which stage spectacular public events announced by giant billboards facing new public plazas. These ‘Pleasuredromes’ facilitate a diverse range of sporting, recreational, and cultural activities including an auditorium with an opening roof. Each ‘Drome’ is served by and also sustains the existing car park beneath.
